United States President Donald Trump has stirred fresh international controversy after suggesting that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz could be renamed the “Trump Strait.”

Trump made the suggestion on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in a post on his Truth Social platform, where he claimed that the United States had gained control of the vital waterway.

“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!” Trump wrote.

The suggestion was subsequently echoed by the White House, which shared a map of the region carrying the label “Trump Strait” and described the proposed name as having “a nice ring to it.”

Trump, however, appeared to soften the proposal when questioned by journalists at the White House, suggesting that the idea had merely been “thrown out there.”

The development comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with military confrontation around the strategic waterway raising concerns over regional security and global energy supplies.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Is Important

The Strait of Hormuz, situated between Iran and Oman, is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.

A significant portion of global oil supplies passes through the narrow waterway, making its security crucial to international energy markets. Any prolonged disruption could potentially affect oil prices, shipping and energy supplies across several countries.

Iran has historically asserted significant authority over the waterway, while Trump has repeatedly claimed that the United States has control of the strategic passage amid the current confrontation.

The proposed renaming has also drawn attention because the Strait of Hormuz is not United States territory. Its waters form part of an internationally significant maritime route bordered by Iran and Oman.

Trump's latest suggestion follows his administration's broader push to promote alternative names for prominent geographical locations, including the U.S. government's adoption of “Gulf of America” for the body of water widely known internationally as the Gulf of Mexico.

The proposal to rename the Strait of Hormuz could therefore become another flashpoint in the already tense geopolitical environment surrounding the Middle East.

One Feared Dead, Another Injured in Ghastly Accident in Agadagba-Obon By NigerDelta Voice Reporters, Ondo State Correspondent. 24th November, 2025 A tragic motor accident occurred earlier today in Agadagba-Obon, leaving one person dead and another severely injured. The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses said the accident happened suddenly, throwing the victims from the vehicle as it overturned. The cause of the crash is yet to be officially confirmed, but community members have called for caution on the increasingly dangerous route.
