2027: Why the Ondo South Senatorial District May Be Looking Towards Experience, Capacity and Quality Representation
As the 2027 general elections draw closer, political activities are gradually gathering momentum across Ondo State, with the Ondo South Senatorial District emerging as one of the most closely watched political battlegrounds.
At the centre of the unfolding contest is Dr. Duerimini Isaac Kekemeke, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Ondo South Senatorial District—a politician whose career has traversed the legislative, executive and party-administration spheres.
For many political observers, Kekemeke’s emergence has brought experience, political structure and a clear record of public service into the conversation about who should represent the people of Ondo South at the National Assembly.
A Candidate with Political Experience
Kekemeke is not a newcomer to governance. His political journey includes service as a member and Minority Leader of the old Ondo State House of Assembly, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Works, Lands and Housing, and Secretary to the Ondo State Government.
He also served as Chairman of the APC in Ondo State and rose to become the party’s National Vice Chairman, South-West.

He polled 35,835 votes, defeating Akinfolarin Mayowa Samuel, who scored 6,435 votes, while Moratorium Lebi came third with 1,845 votes. The result was announced at the Ondo South Senatorial District Collation Centre in Okitipupa.
His victory came after significant support from stakeholders across the six local government areas that make up Ondo South. Before the primary, the six council chairmen had publicly backed his candidacy, citing his experience and political pedigree.
The development gave his campaign an important political foundation as he moved from aspirant to the APC's standard-bearer for the 2027 senatorial election.
Ondo South at a Crossroads
Beyond political calculations, the 2027 election presents Ondo South with an important question: What kind of representation does the district need at the Senate?
The district, comprising Odigbo, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, Okitipupa, Irele, Ilaje and Ese-Odo, possesses enormous economic potential, particularly in agriculture, fisheries, maritime resources and the emerging blue economy.
Yet, many communities continue to grapple with infrastructure deficits, poor road networks, inadequate social amenities, environmental challenges and the difficulties associated with riverine terrain.

Recent political developments in Ondo State have generated speculation about internal alignments within the APC and the relationship between Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Kekemeke. Kekemeke has publicly dismissed reports of a rift, maintaining that his relationship with the governor remains cordial and describing Aiyedatiwa as his benefactor and the leader of the APC in the state.
Such developments underscore the reality that the 2027 election will be shaped not only by candidates and manifestos but also by political alliances, grassroots mobilisation and the ability of parties to maintain internal cohesion.
