Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 governorship election, as a “war” fought against a formidable political coalition.

Davido made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing journalists at a congratulatory gathering held in honour of the governor following his re-election for a second term.

According to the singer, Adeleke faced an array of powerful political figures during the election, including 17 governors, about 50 senators and members of the House of Representatives, yet emerged victorious.

“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.

Davido also commended Osun voters for what he described as their determination to protect their votes, saying the support for the Adeleke family during the election deeply moved him.

He said he became emotional several times on election day because of what he described as the massive support shown by residents.

The singer further argued that Adeleke’s victory demonstrated the importance of delivering good governance and working for the people.

“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.

Davido Announces Youth, Sports Development Plans

Beyond celebrating the electoral victory, Davido disclosed plans to intensify his contribution to youth and sports development in Osun State.

As chairman of the state’s Sports Trust Fund, he said he had deliberately waited until after the election before pursuing some of his proposed initiatives.

Among the projects he mentioned is the development of a recreation centre for young people, with proposed facilities including football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts.

Davido said the initiative is intended to provide young people with platforms to develop their talents and participate in sporting activities.

Adeleke Wins by 66,252 Votes

The comments followed Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party, winner after he secured 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.

Adeleke won by a margin of 66,252 votes and secured victory in 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11.

The result gives Adeleke another four-year term as governor and marks his second consecutive victory in the state governorship race.

Davido, who had openly supported his uncle throughout the campaign, said the outcome should serve as encouragement to political leaders who prioritise the welfare and development of their people.
