A fresh legal storm is brewing around President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a civil society organisation has approached the Federal High Court in Kano, seeking to stop him from contesting the 2027 presidential election over allegations that he submitted forged academic and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Incorporated Trustees of the Centre for Reforms and Public Advocacy, in a suit marked FHC/KN/CS/312/2026, is asking the court to declare that Tinubu is constitutionally unqualified to seek another term in office.

According to the court documents, the President, INEC and Chicago State University were named as defendants in the case filed on June 26, 2026.

The group alleged that the academic certificate presented by Tinubu to INEC for the 2023 presidential election was forged and urged the court to compel INEC to reject any future nomination submitted by the President for the 2027 election.

The plaintiff also requested an order directing Chicago State University to remove Tinubu's name from its records and sought a perpetual injunction preventing INEC from recognising him as a presidential candidate.

The lawsuit is reportedly based on documents released during the 2023 legal discovery proceedings in the United States involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Chicago State University. The organisation further alleged inconsistencies in the President's academic records, names appearing on official documents and the NYSC certificate submitted to INEC.

It argued that the alleged discrepancies make Tinubu constitutionally ineligible to contest another presidential election.
The group disclosed that it had previously written to INEC, the NYSC and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation between 2025 and 2026 seeking clarification on the President's academic and service records but claimed that no satisfactory response was received.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal High Court had not fixed a hearing date for the matter, while President Tinubu, INEC and Chicago State University had yet to file their responses to the allegations.

The allegations remain before the court, and no judicial determination has been made on the claims.
