Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has come under criticism on social media after celebrating his son's graduation from a university in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Jonathan had shared the achievement on his social media page, congratulating his son on completing his studies abroad. While many Nigerians joined in celebrating the milestone, others questioned why the former president's son studied overseas instead of attending a Nigerian university.

The post attracted hundreds of reactions, with some users expressing disappointment over what they described as a lack of confidence in Nigeria's education system by the country's political elite.

One Facebook user, Andy Ugwuna, wrote: "Congratulations. But why didn't he school in Nigeria?"

Another commenter, Bishop Desmond, questioned why the former president did not choose the Federal University Otuoke in Bayelsa State, a university established during Jonathan's administration.

Similarly, Plato Okeke alleged that Nigerian leaders often fail to patronise local institutions, writing that while they oversee the country's affairs, they send their children abroad for education.

Others also used the opportunity to compare their own educational journeys, with one commenter joking that although Jonathan's son graduated from Manchester, he graduated from the University of Maiduguri, adding, "Congratulations to us both."

Despite the criticism, many supporters congratulated Jonathan and his family, describing the graduation as a proud achievement and wishing the graduate success in his future endeavours.

The reactions have once again reignited public debate over the quality of Nigeria's education system and the continued preference by many prominent public officials to educate their children in foreign institutions.
