𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗟: 𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝘆𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗶, 𝗛𝗥𝗠 𝗔𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗗𝗼𝗸𝘂𝗯𝗼 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗷𝗮𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 (𝗜𝗬𝗖)

𝗕𝗬 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗟𝗧𝗔 𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘,

𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗮, 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮.

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) remains one of the most influential youth organizations in Nigeria, serving as the foremost platform for advancing the interests, aspirations and development of the Ijaw people. Since its establishment, the council has played a significant role in advocating for justice, equity, environmental protection and sustainable development across the Niger Delta.

As the IYC begins another chapter under a new leadership, expectations are high among Ijaw youths, community leaders and stakeholders. Many believe this is a defining moment that calls for unity, purposeful leadership and a renewed commitment to the ideals upon which the council was founded.

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has consistently emphasized peace, stability and development as essential pillars for the progress of the Ijaw nation. His administration has repeatedly called on young people to embrace education, entrepreneurship and constructive engagement rather than conflict. These principles remain relevant as the IYC charts its future.

Likewise, HRM Asari Dokubo, a prominent traditional ruler and influential voice in the Niger Delta, continues to command significant attention among many Ijaw youths. Whether through his public interventions, cultural advocacy or outspoken positions on issues affecting the region, his influence underscores the importance of experienced voices guiding younger generations toward dialogue, unity and responsible leadership.

The future of the IYC should not revolve around personalities, political affiliations or sectional interests. Instead, it should be anchored on the collective welfare of the Ijaw people. The council must remain independent enough to speak truth to power when necessary while also collaborating with governments, traditional institutions, civil society and development partners to achieve meaningful progress.

Critical issues demanding the council's attention include youth unemployment, quality education, environmental degradation, coastal erosion, insecurity, economic empowerment and the protection of the rights of oil-producing communities. These challenges require strategic thinking, credible advocacy and sustained engagement rather than internal divisions.

The new leadership has an opportunity to reposition the IYC as a respected institution that promotes peace, accountability and development. Building stronger relationships with governments at all levels, while preserving the council's credibility and independence, will be essential to achieving lasting results.

Governor Douye Diri, HRM Asari Dokubo and other respected leaders can contribute by encouraging dialogue, mentoring emerging leaders and supporting initiatives that strengthen unity across the Ijaw nation. Their influence should help inspire a new generation committed to service, integrity and the collective good.

Ultimately, the future of the IYC rests not in the hands of a few prominent individuals but in the determination of every Ijaw youth to uphold the council's founding ideals. If unity prevails over division, vision over ambition and service over self-interest, the IYC can remain a powerful force for positive change in the Niger Delta and a beacon of hope for generations to come.
