The Nigerian Navy has destroyed a suspected criminal staging camp uncovered in the Rivers–Bayelsa creek corridor following an intelligence-driven operation aimed at preventing militant activities, oil theft and other maritime crimes in the Niger Delta region.

The operation, carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, followed heightened surveillance and patrols around the waterways. Naval authorities said the discovery was made after suspicious movement involving a high-powered speedboat carrying persons in unconfirmed uniforms was observed within the creek axis.

According to the Navy, further investigation led operatives to a concealed hideout suspected to have been used for hostile and illegal activities. Items recovered from the location reportedly included ammunition, electrical materials and substances suspected to be linked to criminal operations.

The recovered camp and materials were subsequently destroyed to prevent the location from being reused by criminal elements, while ammunition recovered from the site was taken for further investigation.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations across the Niger Delta waterways, particularly against groups involved in maritime crime, illegal oil activities and threats to critical national assets.

The development comes amid increased security operations across Bayelsa and neighbouring riverine communities, where security agencies have intensified efforts to dismantle illegal camps and protect the region’s oil and maritime infrastructure.
