Burkina Faso's military-led government has officially severed diplomatic relations with France, marking a major escalation in tensions between the West African nation and its former colonial ruler.
The announcement was made on Friday, June 26, through a statement broadcast on national television. The government said the decision takes immediate effect and accused France of pursuing "neo-colonial ambitions" and actively supporting subversive groups and terrorists operating in Burkina Faso and across the Sahel.
"The government of Burkina Faso hereby informs the national and international community that it has decided to sever diplomatic relations with France with effect from today, June 26, 2026," the statement said.
The ruling junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traorรฉ, claimed France's actions have undermined Burkina Faso's sovereignty and national security. Authorities alleged that Paris has continued to interfere in the country's internal affairs by backing networks working against the government.
In response, France rejected the accusations, describing Burkina Faso's decision as "hostile and baseless." French officials said the move reflects what they called the "troubling drift" of Burkina Faso's authorities and added that reciprocal diplomatic measures are being considered.
Despite ending formal diplomatic relations, Burkina Faso clarified that the decision applies only to official state-to-state diplomatic engagement and does not affect the long-standing historical, cultural, social and human ties between the Burkinabe and French people.
The latest development comes amid growing anti-French sentiment across several former French colonies in West Africa, where military governments have increasingly distanced themselves from Paris while strengthening relations with countries such as Russia and China.
Burkina Faso has been battling an insurgency by armed extremist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State for more than a decade. The worsening security situation has contributed to political instability, leading to the military takeover that brought Captain Ibrahim Traorรฉ to power in September 2022.
The diplomatic break further reshapes geopolitical dynamics in the Sahel, as France continues to scale back its influence in the region while military-led governments pursue new foreign policy alliances.
