The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has endorsed the ongoing dialogue between the Federal Government and the Ogoni people, expressing optimism that the engagement could finally resolve the 33-year dispute over oil exploration and environmental justice in Ogoniland.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued after the Ogoni National Congress, held at MOSOP's Peace and Freedom Centre in Bori, Rivers State. The congress brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, youth and women groups, professionals, politicians and students to deliberate on issues affecting the Ogoni people.

The communiqué, signed by MOSOP President Fegalo Nsuke and Secretary-General Alex Akori, welcomed the dialogue process being coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

According to the congress, the prolonged conflict between the Ogoni people and Nigeria's oil industry has lasted for over three decades and should now be resolved through constructive engagement and mutual understanding.

The gathering urged the Federal Government to ensure that every agreement reached through the dialogue process is implemented transparently and in good faith to guarantee lasting peace and sustainable development in Ogoniland.

The congress also condemned the growing incidents of inter- and intra-community clashes across Ogoni communities, calling on all parties to embrace peaceful dialogue and reconciliation instead of violence.

Residents were further encouraged to promote tolerance, unity and good neighbourliness as essential ingredients for maintaining peace throughout the area.

In addition, delegates expressed concern over the activities of herders in Ogoni communities and directed the MOSOP leadership to engage representatives of the Northern Community in Rivers State to find an amicable solution to the issue.

Ogoniland, located in Rivers State within Nigeria's Niger Delta, has remained at the centre of national and international discussions on environmental pollution, resource control, human rights and the possible resumption of oil production following decades of suspension.

The Federal Government is currently engaging Ogoni stakeholders through a structured dialogue process aimed at addressing longstanding grievances and charting a sustainable path toward peace, environmental restoration and economic development.
