New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has disclosed that his administration is reviewing whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be arrested if he visits the city to attend the United Nations General Assembly scheduled for September.

Speaking during an interview on The New York Times podcast, Mamdani said the matter is currently being examined by the city's legal department, describing it as part of a commitment he made during his mayoral campaign.

According to the mayor, he believes Netanyahu should face justice at The Hague, citing the arrest warrant issued against the Israeli leader by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over alleged war crimes linked to the conflict in Gaza.

Mamdani, however, acknowledged that the legal basis for such an action remains under review, stressing that his administration would act strictly within the law.

The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and other Israeli officials in 2024 over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack and Israel's subsequent military operations in Gaza. Israel has consistently rejected the allegations, while both former President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump criticised the court's decision.

The United States is not a member of the ICC and is therefore not bound by the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the court. The Trump administration has also maintained a strong opposition to the ICC, with senior officials accusing the court of overstepping its authority.

Reacting to Mamdani's remarks, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz dismissed the proposal, describing it as "pure political theater" and reiterating that the United States does not recognise the jurisdiction of the ICC.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu also downplayed the mayor's comments in a recent media interview.

Meanwhile, Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, insisted that Netanyahu would attend the UN General Assembly as planned. He stated that the Israeli leader would address world leaders and reaffirm Israel's position and what he described as the country's right to defend its citizens.

The development has further highlighted the ongoing international debate surrounding the ICC's arrest warrants and the legal and diplomatic challenges they present.

One Feared Dead, Another Injured in Ghastly Accident in Agadagba-Obon By NigerDelta Voice Reporters, Ondo State Correspondent. 24th November, 2025 A tragic motor accident occurred earlier today in Agadagba-Obon, leaving one person dead and another severely injured. The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses said the accident happened suddenly, throwing the victims from the vehicle as it overturned. The cause of the crash is yet to be officially confirmed, but community members have called for caution on the increasingly dangerous route.
