𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗜𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 (𝗥𝘁. 𝗛𝗼𝗻) 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮?

𝗕𝗬 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗟𝗧𝗔 𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘,

𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗮, 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮.

The title "Right Honourable (Rt. Hon.)" is one of the most respected legislative honorifics in Nigeria, but contrary to common practice, it is not meant for every elected lawmaker.

By parliamentary convention, the title is reserved exclusively for presiding officers of legislative chambers. Those entitled to bear the title include:

- The Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

- The Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the 36 State Houses of Assembly.

- Former Speakers of the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly, who traditionally retain the title after leaving office.

Regular members of the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly are addressed simply as "Honourable" (Hon.), while members of the Senate are known as "Distinguished Senators."

Similarly, executive office holders such as the President, Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors are addressed as "His/Her Excellency" rather than "Right Honourable."

Constitutional and parliamentary experts have repeatedly emphasized that the use of the title "Rt. Hon." by individuals who have never served as Speakers or Deputy Speakers is inconsistent with established legislative tradition in Nigeria.

The clarification serves as a reminder of the importance of using official titles correctly and preserving the dignity and protocols associated with public offices in the country's democratic system.
