The Federal Government has suspended the proposed review of registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) following widespread public concern.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Education said the decision was taken to allow for comprehensive consultations with stakeholders before any final decision is reached.

According to the Ministry, the earlier letter dated June 18, 2026, which conveyed the proposed fee adjustment, has been withdrawn to pave the way for a broader review process involving key stakeholders across the education sector.

The Ministry acknowledged the concerns and constructive feedback from Nigerians, describing the public response as a reflection of the country's commitment to ensuring access to quality education.

It explained that the proposed increase was informed by rising operational costs associated with conducting national examinations, including logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment, quality assurance, and other essential services required to maintain the credibility of public examinations.

However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be placed on hold, reaffirming the Federal Government's commitment to inclusive, transparent, and evidence-based policymaking.

The Ministry stressed that any policy affecting millions of Nigerian students and their families must be carefully considered to ensure it is socially responsive and reflects the collective interest of the nation.

The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses said the accident happened suddenly, throwing the victims from the vehicle as it overturned.
