𝗕𝗬 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗟𝗧𝗔 𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘,
𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗮, 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has dismissed a suit challenging the emergence of Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.

The suit was instituted by an NDC governorship aspirant, Kings Unyeawaji, who alleged that he was unlawfully excluded from the party's governorship primary. He urged the court to nullify the nomination of Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs.

Joined as defendants in the suit were the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the party's National Chairman, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs.

At the hearing before Justice Muhammed Turaki, counsel to the plaintiff informed the court that his client had decided to discontinue the case and applied to withdraw the suit. With no objection from any of the defendants, the court dismissed the matter.

Before the withdrawal, counsel to Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs had challenged the competence of the suit, arguing that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter. He further contended that the plaintiff neither participated in the party's governorship primary nor filed the action within the period prescribed by law.

Reacting to the ruling, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs described the dismissal of the suit as a positive development and commended the plaintiff for choosing to end the legal dispute peacefully.

He urged political actors in Rivers State to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than prolonged litigation, stressing that the electorate should be allowed to determine the state's next governor through the ballot.

"We are all Rivers people. There are no monsters among us. Let us go to the field, contest on a level playing ground, and allow the people to decide," he said.

Lulu-Briggs also reaffirmed his commitment to delivering good governance, driving economic growth, and promoting sustainable development across Rivers State if elected governor in the 2027 poll.

The dismissal of the suit effectively brings to an end the legal challenge against Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs' candidacy, clearing the way for the Nigeria Democratic Congress to intensify its preparations and campaign ahead of the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.

The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
