The National Union of Ijaw Students (NUIS) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding an immediate investigation into the ongoing gas leak in Bille Kingdom, Rivers State, and urgent measures to address the environmental disaster.

The union made the demand following an assessment visit to the affected community, where its leadership said it witnessed the severe impact of the gas leak on residents, livelihoods, and the environment.

In a statement signed by the National President of NUIS, Comrade Boma Briggs, the union called on the Federal Government to immediately halt the gas leak, provide emergency relief materials to affected residents, ensure adequate compensation for victims, and commence comprehensive environmental remediation in the impacted area.

The student body expressed concern over the prolonged effects of the incident, stressing that the people of Bille should not be left to bear the consequences of environmental pollution without prompt government intervention.

NUIS also appealed to student unions, youth organizations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders across the country to support the people of Bille in their demand for justice, accountability, and urgent action.

The union warned that failure by the Federal Government to respond within the seven-day ultimatum would leave it with no option but to embark on lawful and democratic actions aimed at drawing national attention to the plight of the affected community.
