The Delta State Executive Council has approved plans to institutionalise the payment of a 13th-month salary for civil servants by transmitting an Executive Bill to the Delta State House of Assembly for legislative approval.

The decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, as part of the administration's commitment to improving workers' welfare and ensuring the benefit becomes a permanent legal entitlement.

Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed the development while briefing journalists alongside the Commissioners for Health and Transport after the meeting.

According to Aniagwu, the Executive Council approved a memo presented by Governor Oborevwori seeking to make the payment of the 13th-month salary a statutory benefit for Delta State civil servants rather than a discretionary payment by successive administrations.

He explained that once the Executive Bill is passed by the Delta State House of Assembly and signed into law, civil servants will continue to enjoy the benefit regardless of changes in government.

The council also approved the recruitment of additional teachers for public secondary schools to address shortages, particularly in science subjects. The Ministry of Secondary Education was directed to prepare a detailed proposal indicating the number of teachers required.

In addition, the Executive Council approved the procurement and installation of equipment for the Technical College in Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area, while also approving plans to equip the Technical College in Irri upon its completion.

The approvals, according to the government, are aimed at strengthening technical education, expanding access to quality learning, and equipping young people with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

The council further approved several matters relating to the health and transport sectors, including the creation of new transport routes across the state.

Also approved was the appointment of HRM Goodnews Goodman Agbi, PhD, Athuaro I, as the Ovie of Oyede Kingdom in Isoko North Local Government Area.

The Delta State Government said the decisions reflect Governor Oborevwori's continued commitment to improving workers' welfare, enhancing education, strengthening healthcare delivery, and expanding public services across the state.

The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses said the accident happened suddenly, throwing the victims from the vehicle as it overturned. The cause of the crash is yet to be officially confirmed, but community members have called for caution on the increasingly dangerous route.
