The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide on Wednesday formally ushered in a new era of leadership as its newly elected 10th National Executive Council (NEC), led by Dr. Doubra Collins Okotete, was inaugurated in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The event marks the official handover of the mantle of leadership from the outgoing administration headed by Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri to the new executive, bringing to a close one administration and signalling the beginning of another for the foremost socio-cultural youth organisation of the Ijaw nation.
Dr. Okotete emerged President of the IYC Worldwide during the council's national convention and election held on July 11, 2026, after securing victory in a keenly contested poll.
Ahead of the inauguration, the outgoing leadership constituted a Transition Committee to ensure a seamless transfer of power, reaffirming the council's commitment to democratic governance, continuity and institutional stability.
In his post-election remarks, Dr. Okotete described his emergence as "a victory for unity, peace, democracy and the collective will of the Ijaw people." He called on all contestants and supporters to put the election behind them and work together in the collective interest of the Ijaw nation.
The new IYC President pledged to run an inclusive administration anchored on youth empowerment, peacebuilding, justice, sustainable development and the protection of the rights and interests of Ijaw communities across the Niger Delta.
The inauguration attracted prominent Ijaw leaders, traditional rulers, former IYC presidents, youth delegates, political office holders and other stakeholders from across the Niger Delta, who gathered to witness the historic transition.
Prior to the ceremony, goodwill messages and congratulatory statements had continued to pour in from the IYC Parliament, youth organisations and other socio-political groups, expressing confidence that the new leadership would strengthen unity within the council, promote development and advance the aspirations of Ijaw youths.
With the formal transfer of leadership completed, expectations remain high that the Okotete-led National Executive Council will consolidate on the achievements of previous administrations, deepen engagement with governments and development partners, and provide purposeful leadership in addressing the challenges and aspirations of Ijaw youths both within and outside the Niger Delta.
