Calls for increased attention to the concerns of Ijaw communities in Edo State have continued to gain momentum following a declaration by the Amayanabo of Torusarama-Piri, Elem Kalabari, HRM Asari Dokubo, that Edo State has become a key focus in the ongoing advocacy for Ijaw rights and development.

Dokubo made the statement during the 2026 Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide Manifesto Presentation and Debate held in Degema, Rivers State, where he raised concerns over what he described as the challenging circumstances facing Ijaw communities in Edo State.

The Ijaw monarch stressed the need for stakeholders to prioritise the welfare, inclusion, and socio-economic development of Ijaw communities in the state, noting that the issues affecting the people require urgent and sustained attention.

“Our next battleground is Edo State. We cannot allow the Ijaws in Edo State to remain in the condition they are,” Dokubo said.

His remarks have sparked renewed conversations among Ijaw leaders, youth organisations, and community stakeholders, with many advocating for stronger representation, improved infrastructure, and equitable access to opportunities for Ijaw people in Edo State.

Concerns surrounding the development and inclusion of Ijaw communities in the state have remained a subject of discussion among various groups seeking greater recognition, participation, and progress for the people.
