𝗕𝗬 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗟𝗧𝗔 𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘,
𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗮, 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮

The Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has sanctioned students from three secondary schools following a viral “sign-out” video that generated public criticism on social media.

The affected schools include Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School. The video, which surfaced after the conclusion of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), showed some graduating students engaging in disorderly celebrations, including tearing their school uniforms and chanting inappropriate slogans.

Following the incident, the Ministry convened an emergency meeting with school principals and education officials at its headquarters in Akure to address the alleged misconduct.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the government announced that the testimonials and WASSCE results of 17 students identified in the video would be withheld pending further review. The students’ names would also be entered into the misconduct records of their respective schools.

The Ministry further directed all secondary schools across the state to establish a “black book” for documenting serious student misconduct, while senior officers at the affected schools were queried over alleged failure to properly supervise the students.

Students featured in the video who are not in their final class have also been directed to face immediate expulsion.

Parents and the affected students have been summoned to the Ministry to receive official disciplinary letters.

Speaking after the disciplinary hearing, Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said the government would not tolerate actions capable of undermining discipline and the reputation of the state’s education system.

According to him, while students have the right to celebrate academic achievements, such celebrations must be conducted with responsibility and decency.

He said the government would continue to protect the values of discipline and good conduct in schools.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Akindele Ige, also urged school principals to promptly report emerging issues to education authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses said the accident happened suddenly, throwing the victims from the vehicle as it overturned. The cause of the crash is yet to be officially confirmed, but community members have called for caution on the increasingly dangerous route.
