The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 673,446 registered voters will participate in the June 20 bye-election to fill the vacant Ondo South Senatorial District seat.

The vacancy followed the appointment of former senator, Jimoh Ibrahim, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Okitipupa on Thursday, Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Olaleke Agboke, disclosed that the commission had completed major preparations for the exercise, including the distribution of non-sensitive election materials.

According to Agboke, the Senate officially declared the seat vacant on April 28, 2026, prompting INEC to commence arrangements for the conduct of the bye-election in line with constitutional provisions. He stated that voting will take place across 1,354 polling units and 66 registration areas located within the six local government areas that make up the district — Okitipupa, Irele, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Odigbo, and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo.

The REC noted that the voter register had been verified and cleaned ahead of the poll, adding that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise would not affect the register approved for the election.

Agboke further revealed that non-sensitive materials had already been deployed, while sensitive materials would be received and distributed under the supervision of political parties and security agencies to ensure transparency.
He also disclosed that 1,359 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines had been tested and certified for use, with an additional 264 backup devices reserved for emergencies.

Reaffirming the commission’s readiness, Agboke assured stakeholders that INEC would conduct a credible election and that only valid votes cast by the electorate would determine the eventual winner.
Candidates of the APC, APM, APP and Boot Party are expected to contest for the senatorial seat.

The electoral umpire urged political parties, candidates and supporters to maintain peace and adhere to electoral guidelines before, during and after the election.

One Feared Dead, Another Injured in Ghastly Accident in Agadagba-Obon By NigerDelta Voice Reporters, Ondo State Correspondent. 24th November, 2025 A tragic motor accident occurred earlier today in Agadagba-Obon, leaving one person dead and another severely injured. The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses said the accident happened suddenly, throwing the victims from the vehicle as it overturned. The cause of the crash is yet to be officially confirmed, but community members have called for caution on the increasingly dangerous route.
