Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has said he will not immediately honour an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of naira abuse linked to his son’s naming ceremony.
The singer disclosed this in a series of videos posted on his Instagram page, revealing that he had received an official invitation from the anti-graft agency following claims that he sprayed and mishandled the naira during the family celebration held in May.
Portable stated that his lawyer would respond to the EFCC on his behalf, adding that he does not intend to appear before the commission until September due to concerns over insecurity and economic hardship in the country.
According to him, the decision was not an attempt to evade investigation but was based on legal advice and the need to prioritise the safety of his family.
The singer questioned the basis of the invitation, arguing that Nigeria is currently facing more pressing issues such as kidnapping and widespread insecurity.
He also criticised the EFCC for allegedly focusing attention on entertainers while more serious security challenges persist across the country. Portable described the invitation as unnecessary and claimed he was being unfairly targeted.
Appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the singer said he remained a supporter of the current administration and insisted that he was not involved in fraud, money laundering, or any other financial crime aside from the allegations relating to naira abuse.
Portable further raised concerns over what he described as selective enforcement of laws regulating abuse of the national currency, claiming that other public figures had engaged in similar acts without facing comparable scrutiny.
The musician also explained that the money sprayed during the event was obtained through a bureau de change operator and noted that he was still repaying the funds. He expressed surprise that a private celebration held at his residence had attracted the attention of the authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued any official response to the singer’s comments.
