Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly selected former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to political reports, the decision follows weeks of negotiations within the opposition coalition framework, where discussions over zoning, alliance structure, and ticket balance had intensified ahead of the polls.

Sources indicate that the pairing is being positioned as a strategic North-East/South-South alliance, with Atiku expected to lead the presidential ticket while Amaechi serves as vice-presidential candidate.

The development is also seen as a recalibration of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general election, particularly following realignments involving key political figures, including former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who are now linked to a rival coalition arrangement.

However, Amaechi had previously publicly distanced himself from speculation about accepting a vice-presidential role, stating that no formal engagement had been made regarding such a position at the time.

Political observers note that the arrangement marks a significant shift in the opposition landscape, especially given Amaechi’s past role as a leading figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his long-standing influence in Rivers State politics.

Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Chibuike Amaechi has issued a final public confirmation beyond coalition-level discussions at the time of filing this report.

The development is expected to reshape early campaign dynamics as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general election.

The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses said the accident happened suddenly, throwing the victims from the vehicle as it overturned. The cause of the crash is yet to be officially confirmed, but community members have called for caution on the increasingly dangerous route.
