𝗕𝗬 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗟𝗧𝗔 𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘,
𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗮, 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮.

The countdown has begun for the 2026 Ondo State Basic Education School Sports (BESS) Festival, with athletes from the 18 Local Government Areas set to compete for honours in one of the state’s biggest grassroots sporting events.

The championship, organised by the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), is expected to bring together talented pupils, coaches, officials, and education stakeholders for a celebration of youth sports, discipline, teamwork, and talent discovery.

The five-day sporting fiesta will commence on Monday, June 29, 2026, with the arrival of participating teams, while competitive events will begin on Tuesday, June 30, as schools battle through preliminary rounds across different sporting categories.

The competition will reach its climax on Thursday, July 2, when the best-performing athletes and teams will compete for medals and the coveted overall championship trophy.

Defending champions, Okitipupa Zone, will return to the tournament with the aim of retaining their position as the dominant force in Ondo basic school sports. The zone emerged overall champions in the previous edition after an impressive performance that placed them ahead of other contenders.

Okitipupa finished at the top of the medal standings with 11 medals — 6 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze medals — securing the championship crown. Akoko North Zone also recorded 11 medals but finished second after winning 3 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze medals, while Idanre Zone claimed third place with 6 medals — 2 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals.

The last edition produced memorable moments as young athletes displayed exceptional ability in athletics, football, and other events, proving that the future of sports in Ondo State remains promising.

However, Okitipupa’s path to another title will not be easy, as rival zones are preparing to challenge the champions. Teams from Akoko North, Idanre, Akure, Ondo, Owo, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, Ese Odo and other participating areas are expected to arrive with strong ambitions of lifting the trophy.

Beyond the excitement of competition, the BESS Festival continues to serve as a breeding ground for future sporting stars by identifying young talents who could go on to represent Ondo State at national and international levels.

With the opening whistle fast approaching, the spotlight is now on the young athletes who will carry the hopes of their various LGAs. The big question remains: Will Okitipupa defend its crown, or will a new champion emerge from the 18-team battle?

Only the performances on the field, track, and courts will decide who writes their name into the history of Ondo school sports.

The deceased, identified simply as Help , reportedly lost his life after the vehicle involved in the incident somersaulted multiple times. Another occupant, identified as Philip Ojuri , sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Eyewitnesses said the accident happened suddenly, throwing the victims from the vehicle as it overturned.
