Governor Siminalayi Fubara was absent on Saturday as the All Progressives Congress commenced the screening of governors and aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The screening exercise, held in Abuja, also featured the screening of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s lone challenger, Stanley Osifo, alongside more than 14 governors seeking fresh mandates or other political positions.
Party officials explained that governors engaged in official state assignments were permitted to miss the exercise temporarily, adding that alternative screening dates would be provided within the approved timetable.
Governors and aspirants from Kano, Plateau, Benue, Delta, Niger, Sokoto and several other states participated in the exercise as preparations for the party primaries intensified.
Fubara’s absence has further fuelled speculations over the political situation in Rivers State amid his prolonged political rift with former Rivers governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Reports also indicated that some allies allegedly purchased APC nomination forms for the Rivers governor through proxies, although it remains unclear whether the forms were officially submitted on his behalf.
Meanwhile, Osifo maintained that he would remain in the presidential race despite the endorsement of Tinubu by the APC leadership. He described the screening process as rigorous but fair, while other aspirants called for transparent primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
