A bizarre incident has sparked widespread reactions after a man reportedly exhumed his late sister’s skeleton and took it to a bank following repeated demands by officials to present the account holder before funds could be released.
The incident occurred at the Maliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank in Keonjhar district, Odisha State in India. The man, identified as Jeetu Munda, had reportedly been attempting to withdraw about ₹20,000 belonging to his deceased elder sister, Kalra Munda, who died in January 2026.
According to reports, Munda visited the bank several times to explain that his sister had passed away, but allegedly faced difficulties accessing the funds as officials insisted the account holder must be physically present.
Frustrated by the situation and reportedly unaware of the legal procedures required to process funds belonging to a deceased person, Munda allegedly dug up his sister’s remains and carried the skeleton to the bank premises as evidence of her death.
Speaking to local media, he reportedly said, “I told them she had died, but they did not listen to me. Out of frustration, I dug up the grave and brought her skeleton.”
The shocking development attracted residents and customers to the bank, prompting intervention by police and local authorities.
Officials later explained that the incident stemmed from poor communication and the man’s lack of understanding of banking procedures. Reports described Munda as illiterate and unfamiliar with the documentation needed to process claims linked to deceased account holders.
Authorities subsequently assisted the family in handling the withdrawal through proper legal channels, while the remains of the deceased woman were reburied under official supervision.
