Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has sparked fresh political debate after describing Nigerian politicians as “Goliaths” obstructing the nation’s progress and calling on citizens to find a “David” capable of rescuing the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the remarks during a youth conference held in Abuja and organised by Rev. Fr. John Chinenye Oluoma of the Abuja Archdiocese, where discussions centred on empowering young Nigerians to confront the nation’s political, economic and social challenges.

Speaking at the conference themed around the biblical story of David and Goliath, Obi accused many politicians of prioritising personal interests above national development, insisting that corruption and abuse of public resources remain major obstacles to Nigeria’s growth.

According to him, politicians who divert public funds for personal gain have become the “Goliaths” preventing the country from moving forward.

“Today, at the David and Goliath Conference in Abuja aimed at empowering Nigerian youths to confront their challenges, I made it clear that the Goliaths in Nigeria’s political landscape are the politicians who divert public funds for personal gain,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra State governor also lamented the worsening conditions across key sectors of the country, including insecurity, healthcare, education, electricity and unemployment, maintaining that poor leadership continues to deepen hardship among Nigerians.

He urged youths to remain disciplined, realistic and focused, while rejecting fake lifestyles and social pressure, adding that young people must begin to see themselves as agents of national transformation.

However, Obi’s “David and Goliath” analogy has continued to generate reactions and political conversations across the country, with many Nigerians questioning who exactly the “David” is that the former presidential candidate referred to.

Observers say the statement has opened up fresh debate ahead of 2027, as opposition figures intensify criticism of the current political system while citizens continue to demand credible leadership capable of addressing insecurity, economic hardship and governance challenges.

Some political commentators believe Obi may have been referring to a new generation of courageous and people-oriented leaders willing to challenge the established political structure, while others argue that Nigerians deserve clearer direction on the kind of leadership being proposed.

The remarks have also triggered conversations on social media, with many Nigerians asking how the supposed “David” can be identified in a political environment often dominated by powerful political interests and elite influence.

As political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections continue to take shape, questions are increasingly being raised over who truly represents the hope, credibility and leadership capacity needed to confront the nation’s growing challenges.

“But who is this David? And how do Nigerians know him?” Nigerians asks.
