A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports alleging plans to adopt former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The group described the reports as false, misleading, and unauthorized, warning against attempts to create confusion within the political space ahead of the next election cycle.
In a statement issued on Friday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, said no convention or official process had been approved to endorse Jonathan for the presidency.
According to him, the reports being circulated in some quarters were aimed at causing political tension and damaging the integrity of the party.
“The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party has been drawn to misleading information and unfounded reports circulating in certain quarters regarding an alleged planned convention aimed at affirming former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the presidential candidate of the PDP,” the statement read.
“The party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled, approved, or endorsed by the leadership or any recognised organ of the Peoples Democratic Party.”
The faction also called on security agencies to investigate the source of the reports and prosecute individuals responsible for spreading what it described as misinformation capable of heating up the polity.
The reaction followed reports that an Interim National Working Committee allegedly led by Tanimu Turaki had planned a convention in Abuja to endorse Jonathan for the 2027 presidential election.
However, the Wike-backed faction insisted that all party primaries, including the presidential primary, had already been concluded in line with the Electoral Act, INEC guidelines, and the party’s constitution.
The group further urged party supporters and members of the public to disregard the reports, maintaining that the information was intended to mislead Nigerians and create unnecessary political uncertainty.
The development comes amid growing political realignments and speculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
