The Edo State government under the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (EDSUBEB), in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has commenced the distribution of Interactive Multimedia Smart Boards to public schools across Edo State as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen digital learning and modernize classroom instruction.

The initiative, which aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope agenda, is aimed at promoting technology-driven teaching and learning in public basic education schools across the state.

Education officials said the deployment of the smart boards would improve classroom interaction, boost digital literacy among pupils, and equip teachers with modern instructional tools capable of supporting multimedia-based learning and enhanced educational outcomes.

The rollout forms part of broader reforms being implemented by the Edo State Government and SUBEB to reposition the basic education sector through technology integration, teacher development, improved infrastructure, and enhanced access to learning materials.

In recent years, Edo State has gained national attention for its EdoBEST (Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation) programme, which introduced digital devices for teachers, technology-supported classroom instruction, school monitoring systems, and data-driven education management across public schools.

As part of the reforms, thousands of teachers across primary and junior secondary schools in the state have undergone professional development and retraining programmes designed to improve classroom delivery and align teaching methods with global best practices.

The state government has also intensified the distribution of UBEC-sponsored textbooks, library resources, and instructional materials to schools, particularly in rural and underserved communities, as part of efforts to improve access to quality education.

In a major boost to the education sector, Governor Monday Okpebholo recently approved the recruitment and permanent appointment of 5,000 teachers across the state’s public education system. The teachers, many of whom previously served on contract appointments, were formally issued employment letters during a ceremony supervised by the governor at the Government House in Benin City.

The newly recruited and regularized teachers have since been deployed to public schools across Edo State, especially underserved and manpower-deficient communities, to address teacher shortages, improve the teacher-pupil ratio, and strengthen learning delivery in rural areas.

Officials said the deployment is expected to improve classroom efficiency, reduce pressure on existing teaching staff, and ensure that children in hard-to-reach communities have access to qualified educators.

The Board has also continued its collaboration with UBEC on programmes focused on school governance, teacher professional development, and community participation in education, including the School-Based Management Committee-School Improvement Programme (SBMC-SIP) and the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) initiative.

According to education authorities, the ongoing reforms reflect the commitment of the Edo State Government and SUBEB to building a more innovative, engaging, and globally competitive learning environment for pupils across the state.

They added that the reforms are targeted at ensuring sustainable improvements in the quality of teaching and learning through digital education, teacher capacity building, improved welfare for educators, modern instructional materials, and strengthened school management systems aimed at delivering better educational outcomes for every Edo child.
