The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has proposed a new national minimum wage of ₦100,000 for Nigerian workers as part of ongoing efforts to address the rising cost of living and economic hardship across the country.

The proposal was disclosed on Friday by the Chairman of the NGF and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who said state governors are committed to improving workers’ welfare amid persistent inflation and increasing economic pressure on households.

According to AbdulRazaq, the governors endorsed the proposed wage increase while continuing consultations with the Federal Government and organised labour to arrive at a sustainable agreement that balances workers’ welfare with fiscal realities.

He noted that the discussions are expected to influence broader conversations around inflation, economic reforms, and workers’ living conditions nationwide.

The NGF chairman also reaffirmed the governors’ support for the economic reform policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Nigeria’s current national minimum wage stands at ₦70,000 per month following approval under the National Minimum Wage Act signed by President Tinubu. However, some states, including Lagos, Rivers, and Imo, are already paying above the approved benchmark.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has continued to push for a fresh wage review, citing worsening inflation and declining purchasing power among workers.

Speaking in his New Year message to workers, NLC President Joe Ajaero said Nigerian workers deserve a living wage capable of sustaining decent living standards rather than mere survival.

“Given the escalating inflation and suffering, we demand an urgent wage review as a worker’s income must guarantee life, not mere survival,” Ajaero stated.

He added that the labour union would continue to pursue improved welfare for workers through legitimate means.

The proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage is expected to intensify negotiations between the Federal Government, state governments, and labour unions in the coming months.
