Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has come under criticism after awarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration a “100 percent performance score” despite renewed insecurity in parts of the state.

Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), gave the assessment during a Sallah visit by APC governors to President Tinubu in Lagos, where he praised the President for allegedly rescuing Nigeria from collapse and restoring stability through economic reforms.

“We have assessed your performance, Mr President, and I’m happy to announce that we have scored it 100 per cent,” Uzodimma said during the meeting.

However, barely a day after the comment, insecurity concerns again dominated discussions in Imo State following fresh reports of kidnappings and violent attacks.

One of the latest incidents involved the kidnapping of 17-year-old Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) student, Mary Ezinwayi Uzoma, who was abducted along the FUTO/Ihiagwa Road in Owerri West Local Government Area. The Imo State Police Command confirmed that anti-kidnapping operatives and tactical teams were deployed to rescue the student and track the abductors.

In another major security incident reported recently in the state, gunmen suspected to be armed herdsmen attacked Eziobodo community in Owerri West, killing one person and abducting several residents after blocking roads and shooting sporadically for hours. Residents described the attack as terrifying and accused authorities of failing to stop repeated assaults in the area.

The incidents have fueled criticism from residents and opposition voices who argue that insecurity remains a serious problem in Imo despite repeated endorsements of the Federal Government by political leaders.

Civil society groups have also accused security agencies in Imo of human rights abuses in the course of anti-kidnapping operations, with petitioners recently urging Governor Uzodimma to investigate allegations of torture and extrajudicial killings linked to the police anti-kidnapping unit known as “Tiger Base.”

The growing insecurity debate comes as President Tinubu continues to defend his administration’s security and economic policies nationwide.
