The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of a man allegedly involved in the assault of female officers during a routine traffic operation in Osun State.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Osun State Police Command said the suspect was identified from a viral video showing him attacking officers with a stick and a shovel while they were carrying out their lawful duties.
The disturbing footage, which circulated widely on social media, sparked public outrage and prompted an immediate response from law enforcement authorities.
According to the police, a coordinated intelligence-led operation was launched shortly after the incident to track down the suspect. Investigations revealed that he had fled Osun State to Edo State in an attempt to evade arrest. However, he was successfully apprehended by security operatives.
The Command described the arrest as a strong indication of its resolve to ensure that acts of violence against security personnel and members of the public are not tolerated.
It further emphasized that assaulting police officers in the line of duty remains a serious criminal offence under the law.
The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable, and warned that such acts would be met with the full weight of the law.
