A tragic boat accident has claimed the lives of three children following a capsizing incident along the Ikeinghenbiri–Ikebiri creek in Bayelsa State.
The ill-fated boat, which was traveling from Azuzuama community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to Yenagoa, reportedly overturned in the early hours of Thursday at about 1:00 a.m.
According to preliminary reports, the victims, two boys and one girl aged between 6 and 15, were asleep when the incident occurred. Sources indicate that the boat may have been overloaded and experienced a mechanical failure, particularly with its water evacuation pump, which contributed to the disaster.
Local divers responded swiftly to the scene and successfully recovered the bodies of the deceased. The remains are being conveyed back to their families in Azuzuama for burial.
The incident has thrown the riverine community into mourning, with residents expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the young lives. Community leaders have also emphasized the need for stricter safety measures and proper maintenance of boats operating along the waterways.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement as investigations into the exact cause of the accident continue.
