The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly rejected a statement credited to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, alleging that a significant proportion of Nigerian university students are involved in cybercrime.
In a statement released by its Senate President, Usman Adamu Nagwaza, the association described the claim that “six out of ten students engage in internet fraud” as inaccurate, misleading, and damaging to the image of Nigerian students globally.
NANS warned that such broad generalisations risk unfairly branding students as criminals and could undermine confidence in the country’s higher education system. The body maintained that the majority of Nigerian students are focused on their studies and are committed to lawful and productive endeavors.
While reiterating its support for the fight against financial crimes, the student association cautioned public officials against making unverified claims capable of harming the reputation of young Nigerians. It also raised concerns that excessive focus on cyber-related offences involving youths may divert attention from more complex corruption cases involving politically exposed persons.
According to the statement, Nigerian students should be recognised for their resilience and contributions to national development, rather than being stereotyped based on unsubstantiated claims.
NANS, therefore, called on the EFCC chairman to immediately retract the statement, stressing that responsible communication is essential to maintaining public trust and national integrity.
