MTN Nigeria Credits Subscribers with Airtime Over January Service Disruptions
Subscribers of MTN Nigeria have begun receiving airtime credits as compensation for poor quality of service experienced in January 2026.
The development came to light after several users shared notifications on the social media platform X, indicating that their lines had been credited with varying amounts. One message to subscribers read: “Dear Customer, your account has been credited with N341 airtime for quality of service issues in January 2026. Thank you for your understanding.”
Checks show that the compensation differs among users. While some reported receiving over N300, others claimed they got smaller amounts such as N20 and N91, although these figures could not be independently verified.
As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear whether all affected subscribers have been credited or if the process is being implemented in phases.
The move is believed to be in response to increased regulatory pressure from the Nigerian Communications Commission, which mandates telecom operators to meet minimum quality-of-service standards and compensate customers for service failures where necessary.
MTN Nigeria had earlier indicated its willingness to comply with regulatory directives, alongside commitments to expand network infrastructure and enhance service delivery nationwide. However, the company has yet to disclose the number of subscribers affected or the criteria used in determining the compensation amounts.
Telecom service quality remains a persistent concern in Nigeria, with subscribers frequently reporting issues such as dropped calls, slow internet speeds, and network outages. Analysts note that while the airtime compensation may provide temporary relief, sustainable improvements will depend on continued investment in infrastructure and more efficient network management.
