The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) has officially launched its 2024/2025 Students’ Scholarship and Bursary Scheme, unveiling new incentives aimed at promoting academic excellence and boosting human capital development in oil-producing communities.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held Monday at the Commission’s headquarters in Oba-Ile, Akure, OSOPADEC Executive Chairman, Prince Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, described the initiative as a significant step toward empowering youths from Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas.
Poroye noted that the scheme underscores the Commission’s renewed commitment to education as a critical driver of sustainable development. He explained that the intervention is not only about financial support but also about nurturing a skilled and competitive generation.
He commended the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for approving the bursary programme, describing the move as a clear demonstration of the administration’s dedication to students’ welfare and academic growth.
Highlighting key improvements in the scheme, the chairman announced the introduction of scholarships for first-class students in Science and Engineering disciplines. According to him, the initiative is designed to encourage academic excellence and prepare beneficiaries for opportunities in technology-driven sectors.
He also disclosed the inclusion of specialized scholarships and sponsorship programmes for professional courses in Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, stressing the importance of strengthening healthcare capacity within the communities.
Poroye referenced resolutions from the recent OSOPADEC Stakeholders’ Summit in Igbokoda, noting that priorities such as transparency, community participation, and sustainable development are already being implemented through programmes like the bursary scheme.
He assured stakeholders of a more efficient process, adding that the current administration has recorded unprecedented speed in approvals and fund disbursement since the scheme began in 2004.
The chairman further directed the Commission’s Community Welfare Department to begin nationwide data collection to identify eligible students.
While commending student bodies such as the National Association of Ilaje Students (NAIS) and the Federation of Ese-Odo Local Government Students (FELGOS) for their engagement, Poroye urged beneficiaries to remain focused and committed to academic excellence.
The event concluded with Poroye receiving an Award of Excellence from NAIS and FELGOS. Presenting the award, Special Assistant on Youths and Students Affairs, Comrade Deji Semudara, described the chairman as a visionary leader dedicated to advancing student welfare and human capital development.
