The Ondo State Executive Council has approved the construction of new hospital buildings across the state, alongside key decisions on chieftaincy matters and infrastructure development. The approvals were reached at the council’s first meeting for 2026, presided over by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, and were announced during a press briefing by top government officials.

Commissioner for Health, Banji Ajaka, disclosed that the government had embarked on a major expansion of healthcare infrastructure, including the construction of multiple 100-bed and 50-bed hospitals across strategic locations.
According to him, the projects include 100-bed hospital facilities in Ikare-Akoko, Ore, and Okitipupa, as well as additional 100-bed facilities at the State Specialist Hospital and a proposed specialist hospital in Igbokoda.

Ajaka added that 50-bed hospitals were also approved for Irele and Igbokoda, alongside the establishment of two “one-stop shop” general hospitals designed to integrate laboratory, X-ray, consultation, and pharmacy services within a single facility.

He noted that the combined capacity of the projects would provide 500 hospital beds, significantly improving access to quality healthcare services across the state.

The commissioner further revealed that the council approved the construction of a new neuropsychiatric hospital and the upgrade of the existing Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Akure, citing the rising cases of mental health challenges and drug abuse.
He explained that the current facility is overstretched, with patients often facing long waiting periods for admission, adding that the new developments would offer modern treatment conditions and improved privacy.

Ajaka also disclosed that the council approved a revised cost for the Contributory Health Commission building to allow for expansion, as well as the procurement of modern medical equipment for the Government House clinic.

In addition, plans are underway to install advanced diagnostic machines, including CT scan, MRI, and mammography equipment, at the University of Medical Sciences.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Abiola Olawoye, confirmed the approval of the hospital construction projects and the upgrade of the neuropsychiatric facility in Akure.

On traditional matters, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, announced the recognition and appointment of several traditional rulers.

These include the recognition of the Onifira Oke of Oke-Ifira in Akoko South-East Local Government Area and the appointment of Prince Olugbenga Adewole Aluko as the new Olojoda of Oda in Akure South Local Government Area.

Other approvals include the elevation of the Owa-Adimula of Oke-Oro in Akoko North-West Local Government Area to Grade C status, as well as the appointment of warrant chiefs for the installation of a new Olufira of Ifira.

Similarly, Prince Jackson Akinson Okorisa was appointed as the new Olu of Jinrinwo in Ilaje Local Government Area, Prince Simeon Oyeleye Obaniyi as the new Olukakumo in Akoko North-East Local Government Area, and Prince Ayodele Akinnadeju as the new Aladeokun of Alade Idanre.

The council also recognised the Ugbagbe of Oroto as Sepeluwa of Oroto in Ilaje Local Government Area and approved the appointment of warrant chiefs for the installation of a new Olofin of Irele.

Providing an overview, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, said the council’s decisions covered critical sectors including health, infrastructure, and local governance.
He noted that the meeting marked the first Executive Council session of the year, coming shortly after the state’s 50th anniversary and the first anniversary of the current administration as an elected government.
