Despite the steady decline in bicycle usage across many parts of Nigeria, the tradition remains deeply rooted in Askira Uba, where bicycles continue to play a central role in marital customs.

In this community in Borno State, suitors are still expected to present bicycles to their prospective brides as part of the traditional marriage rites—an enduring cultural practice that symbolizes commitment, responsibility, and readiness for family life.

Local sources and community members describe the gesture as more than a ceremonial obligation. The bicycle is traditionally seen as a practical asset, historically enabling mobility for the bride and supporting household activities, particularly in rural settings where transportation options are limited.

Community elders note that while modernization has introduced motorcycles and other means of transportation, the symbolic value of the bicycle has not diminished. “It represents a man’s willingness to provide and support his wife,” one local source reportedly stated in discussions circulating on regional social platforms, including Facebook.

Observers say the persistence of this custom highlights the resilience of indigenous traditions, even as broader societal shifts reshape lifestyles across the country. In Askira Uba, the bicycle remains not just a relic of the past, but a living emblem of cultural identity and marital responsibility.

Cultural analysts suggest that such practices continue to strengthen communal bonds and preserve heritage, especially in northern Nigeria where traditional institutions still play a significant role in everyday life.
