Nigeria is once again in mourning following the death of Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, who was killed during a fierce insurgent attack in Borno State alongside other soldiers under his command.

The late officer, who commanded the 29 Task Force Brigade in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway, died in active combat during ongoing counterinsurgency operations under Operation HADIN KAI.

Military sources said the attack occurred in the early hours when insurgents launched a coordinated assault on a military formation from multiple directions, triggering a prolonged and intense firefight. Troops were able to repel the attackers after several hours of engagement, but casualties were recorded, including the Brigade Commander.

In a statement, the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation HADIN KAI, dismissed reports suggesting that the general died due to equipment failure, clarifying that he remained in active command during the battle.

According to the military spokesperson, the commander was “mounted on a high-grade Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, which was temporarily immobilised in the heat of combat while he was actively coordinating the counter-assault.”

The statement stressed that the development reflected the intensity of the engagement rather than any mechanical defect, adding, “This reflects the presence of leadership at the decisive point, not equipment failure.”
The military also rejected claims that as many as 17 personnel, including the Brigade Commander, were killed in the attack, insisting that only two officers and two soldiers lost their lives.

Describing the higher casualty figures as false, the statement noted, “These narratives are entirely misleading and constitute a deliberate attempt to distort facts and undermine ongoing operations.”
It further warned that images and videos circulating online in relation to the incident were not from the Benisheikh attack but were being deliberately misrepresented to support false claims.

The killing of Brigadier General Braimah marks a rare and significant loss of a senior officer in active combat and has renewed concerns over the risks faced by frontline commanders in Nigeria’s prolonged counterinsurgency campaign.
For over a decade, Nigerian forces have battled insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP across the North-East, with Borno State remaining the epicentre of the conflict. Despite sustained military pressure and territorial gains, the groups continue to carry out ambushes, raids on communities and attacks on military formations, particularly in remote areas.

Security analysts say recent patterns point to a resurgence in coordinated assaults on forward operating bases, highlighting the evolving tactics of insurgents and the persistent threat they pose.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, classmates and associates, who described the late officer as professional, disciplined and deeply committed to his duty. Some of his classmates described him as “the Chief of Army Staff that never was,” reflecting the high regard in which he was held.
A former schoolmate also recalled his role during the inauguration of late President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that he served as parade commander and carried out his assignment with diligence.

Braimah’s death has once again highlighted the human cost of Nigeria’s long-running insurgency war, underscoring the dangers faced by troops on the frontlines even as the military continues its operations to restore stability in the region.
