U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed the successful rescue of an American service member inside Iran, following the downing of a U.S. fighter jet during escalating hostilities in the region.
In a statement that quickly drew global attention, Trump declared, “WE GOT HIM!”, announcing that the missing airman had been recovered “safe and sound” after a high-risk military operation.
The incident began when a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iranian territory. The aircraft was carrying two crew members, one of whom was rescued shortly after the crash, while the second was left stranded behind enemy lines, prompting an urgent search-and-rescue mission by U.S. forces.
According to reports from Reuters and The Washington Post, U.S. Special Operations forces carried out a complex recovery effort involving multiple aircraft, including helicopters operating under hostile conditions. The missing airman reportedly evaded capture for more than 24 hours in difficult terrain while being pursued by Iranian forces before U.S. troops executed a deep-penetration extraction mission to recover him.
Despite coming under fire during the operation, all U.S. personnel involved in the rescue were successfully evacuated.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, with ongoing military exchanges raising concerns about a broader regional conflict. The shootdown marks a significant development, representing a rare instance of a U.S. fighter jet being brought down within Iranian territory.
Military officials say the mission underscores the long-standing U.S. doctrine of not leaving service members behind, even in hostile environments. The successful rescue is being viewed as both a tactical achievement and a symbolic demonstration of U.S. military capability at a time of rising geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East.
