Fresh political tension is building across Ondo South following the formal declaration of former Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, to contest the senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Ajayi made his intention public on Wednesday in Akure, setting off early permutations and quiet realignments within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the wider political landscape of the district.
A former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2024, Ajayi’s re-entry into the APC contest is already stirring debate among party stakeholders, particularly given the presence of incumbent senator Jimoh Ibrahim and other emerging aspirants.
Positioning himself as a frontrunner, Ajayi cited his legislative track record as a former member of the House of Representatives for Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency (2007–2011), insisting his experience places him ahead of the pack. He pointed to infrastructure projects, including a 132KVA substation, as evidence of his capacity to attract federal development.
The former deputy governor, who served under late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, also disclosed that he had informed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Senator Ibrahim of his ambition, both of whom, he claimed, responded positively despite underlying political rivalries.
However, his declaration is already heightening concerns over internal competition within the APC, as stakeholders weigh issues of zoning, incumbency advantage, and electoral viability ahead of 2027.
Ajayi intensified the debate by pushing a zoning argument, insisting that Ese-Odo Local Government Area, yet to produce a senator in Ondo South deserves the slot on grounds of equity. The position is expected to generate resistance from other blocs within the district, potentially deepening fault lines as the race unfolds.
He also dismissed speculation about a possible bye-election should the current senator take up a diplomatic role, stressing that his focus remains firmly on the 2027 general elections.
Beyond party politics, Ajayi framed his ambition within a broader national context, emphasizing the need for a strong senatorial candidate capable of boosting support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Ondo South.
As consultations intensify and alignments begin to shift, Ajayi’s entry is widely seen as a catalyst that could reshape the political balance in Ondo South—setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested senatorial battle.
