Opposition political parties in Nigeria have resolved to set aside their differences and present a single consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, in a move aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The decision, known as the “Ibadan Declaration,” was reached at a national summit of opposition parties held on Saturday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Parties represented at the summit included the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ADC, PRP, NNPP, NDC, LP, APP, Accord, APM, AA, DLA, YP, ADP, and ZLP.
Reading the communiqué on behalf of participating party chairmen, PDP National Chairman, Taminu Turaki (SAN), described the coalition as an “existential necessity” to counter what he termed the growing dominance of the APC.

According to the communiqué, the opposition bloc’s primary objective is to prevent Nigeria from drifting into a one-party state. The parties expressed concern over alleged moves by the APC to position President Bola Tinubu as a sole candidate in the 2027 election, vowing to resist through a unified political front.

“We shall work towards fielding one presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, which shall be agreed and supported by all participating opposition parties to rescue our nation and her long-suffering masses,” the statement read.

The summit also passed a vote of no confidence in the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing its chairman, Joash Amupitan, of partisanship in favour of the ruling party.
The opposition warned that Amupitan’s continued stay in office could undermine electoral credibility and trigger political instability, calling for his replacement with a neutral figure.

In addition, the coalition urged the National Assembly to amend provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 which it claimed could compromise the integrity of elections. It also rejected recent INEC guidelines, describing them as restrictive, and called for an extension of the deadline for party primaries to the end of July 2026.

The communiqué further demanded the release of politicians allegedly detained or harassed on bailable offences, describing such actions as violations of fundamental human rights.

The parties commended Nigerians for their resilience amid current challenges and reaffirmed their commitment to preserving a competitive multiparty democracy.

They also appreciated the host governor, Seyi Makinde, for facilitating the summit, which delegates described as a significant milestone in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
