Ijaw political leaders have called for unity among stakeholders, urging politicians of Ijaw extraction to set aside differences and work collectively toward achieving greater political relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ijaw Professionals in Nigeria (IPIN), titled “A Path to Progress in 2027.” The group emphasized the need for cohesion among Ijaw politicians to maximize their strategic influence in the South-South geopolitical zone.

IPIN also encouraged collaboration with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), describing the party as rapidly gaining traction nationwide. According to the group, the NDC has the potential to drive infrastructure development, boost local industries, and stimulate economic growth across the region.

The statement highlighted strong support for the Delta South Senatorial candidate of the NDC, Dr. Austin Orette, whom the group described as a visionary leader with the intellectual capacity and strategic direction to transform the district.

“Dr. Austin Orette represents a new wave of leadership. He is committed to expanding opportunities, advancing industrial and technological development, and promoting environmental sustainability in Delta South,” the statement noted.

Ijaw leaders further pledged to promote political awareness and unity among their people, with the aim of positioning the NDC as a dominant political force in key South-South states, including Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

The position was presented to journalists by the spokesman of the Ijaw United Front (IUF), Dr. Pere Sodienye, who reiterated the group’s commitment to mobilizing grassroots support across Ijaw communities.

The group also urged voters in Delta South to critically assess the performance of the incumbent senator against the promises outlined by Dr. Orette, stressing that the district stands to benefit from a shift toward industrialization and economic revitalization under new leadership.
