The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has conducted a state congress, resulting in the emergence of new party executives, including a secretary, as part of efforts to reposition the party ahead of future elections.
The exercise was reportedly monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside security personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.
Chairman of the Ondo 2026 Congress Committee overseeing ward, local government, and state levels, Adebiyi Abiodun-Philips, described the process as a significant step toward fostering unity within the party. He noted that ongoing reconciliation efforts at both state and national levels had addressed previous internal disputes.
Abiodun-Philips urged party members to prioritise collective interests above personal ambitions, stressing that the PDP is now focused on rebuilding and strengthening its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Ogungbuji, emphasised the need to reposition the party in Ondo State. He called on members to put aside their differences and work together to enhance unity, mobilisation, and electoral competitiveness.
Other officials elected at the congress include Akinwamide Adedeji (Deputy Chairman), Alake Olumuyiwa (Treasurer), Barrister Clement Adefemi (Legal Adviser), Akintemi Akinduyite (Financial Secretary), and Sadiq Fatai (Publicity Secretary), along with 32 additional executive members.
However, the exercise has been rejected by the Dupe Aisida-led faction of the party, which described the congress as illegitimate. The faction’s Publicity Secretary, Wande Ajayi, dismissed the process as a “charade” lacking constitutional backing.
Ajayi argued that no valid state congress could be conducted without properly executed ward and local government congresses, maintaining that the recognised party structure in Ondo State had already completed its processes in accordance with party guidelines.
