A young Rivers State girl, Winnie Uchechi, also known as Winnie Miller, who was allegedly brutalized after speaking out about the poor condition of a community secondary school in Ahoada West Local Government Area, has been appointed a brand ambassador by Portland Resorts, alongside a job offer and scholarship opportunities.
The development follows widespread public outrage after reports emerged that the teenager was assaulted shortly after she shared videos and photographs on social media exposing the dilapidated condition of a secondary school in the Odiokwu community within Ahoada West.
Alleged Assault
According to community sources, Winnie had drawn attention to the deteriorating infrastructure of the school, which residents described as unsafe and in a deplorable state. Her posts quickly circulated online, prompting reactions from concerned citizens and advocacy groups.
Residents later alleged that the Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Eugene Epelle Cheta, accompanied by some aides, visited the girl’s residence where she was reportedly assaulted, leaving her with bruises and other injuries.
The incident sparked condemnation from community members and civil society advocates who insisted that citizens should not face intimidation for drawing attention to public issues.
However, the council chairman denied the allegations, stating that the visit to the girl’s family was peaceful. He claimed the teenager sustained injuries after she fell during a brief altercation while being restrained.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed that it had commenced an investigation into the matter.
Ambassadorial Appointment and Support
In a development that has attracted widespread attention, Portland Resorts announced that Winnie has been appointed as one of its brand ambassadors.
As part of the engagement, the company reportedly offered her a monthly salary exceeding ₦250,000, along with automatic scholarship opportunities for Master’s and PhD programmes should she decide to pursue higher academic qualifications.
The gesture has been widely viewed by observers as a show of solidarity with the young girl, whose story sparked public debate on accountability, governance, and the rights of citizens to speak out on issues affecting their communities.
Civil society groups and residents have continued to call for a transparent investigation into the alleged assault while commending the support extended to the young whistleblower.
