The Iran Football Federation has announced plans to boycott matches scheduled in the United States during the upcoming FIFA World Cup playoffs, even as the FIFA imposed sanctions on the Israel Football Association over discrimination-related breaches.
Iranian football authorities clarified that the country is not withdrawing from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but will refuse to play matches on U.S. soil due to security concerns and ongoing political tensions.
President of the federation, Mehdi Taj, stated that Iran remains committed to the tournament but has formally requested that its fixtures be relocated to alternative host nations, including Mexico.
The development follows rising geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United States, which Iranian officials say could compromise the safety of players and officials.
However, the Asian Football Confederation confirmed it has received no official notification of withdrawal, indicating Iran is still expected to participate as scheduled.
Iran is currently scheduled to play group-stage matches in U.S. host cities, raising uncertainty over logistics if the boycott stance is maintained.
Analysts note that FIFA faces a delicate balancing act between maintaining tournament integrity and addressing member concerns amid politically sensitive conditions.

In a separate development, FIFA sanctioned the Israel Football Association for breaching anti-discrimination regulations.
The governing body imposed a fine of approximately 150,000 Swiss francs and mandated corrective measures, including enhanced anti-racism campaigns and stricter stadium controls.
The sanctions were linked to:
Failure to curb discriminatory behavior among supporters
Inflammatory incidents involving clubs and officials
Violations of FIFA’s equality and fair-play statutes
However, FIFA declined to take action against Israeli clubs operating in disputed West Bank settlements, citing legal and jurisdictional complexities.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is increasingly facing geopolitical headwinds. Observers warn that the intersection of politics and sport could pose significant challenges to tournament planning and execution if tensions persist.
