President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signalled a renewed phase in Nigeria’s security cooperation with the United Kingdom, as both nations move to strengthen defence and counter-terrorism ties amid escalating global tensions, including the ongoing crisis between the United States and Iran.
The President made this known during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, as part of his historic two-day state visit to the UK — the first by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades.
Tinubu disclosed that discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would focus heavily on security cooperation, particularly Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy and the broader stability of West Africa.
According to the President, Nigeria continues to bear a significant burden in safeguarding the West African region, especially as insecurity worsens across the Sahel.
“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” Tinubu said.
He emphasised that collaboration with the United Kingdom remains “essential” in confronting evolving threats such as terrorism, transnational crime, and cyber insecurity.
The planned talks are expected to culminate in a refreshed security framework, building on existing defence cooperation agreements between both countries. These include intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism training, and joint operational support.
Nigeria and the UK already maintain a robust Security and Defence Partnership, which covers areas such as:
Counter-terrorism operations
Cybersecurity and anti-fraud initiatives
Border security and migration control
Military training and intelligence coordination
Both countries have also committed to expanding cooperation against emerging threats like artificial intelligence-driven disinformation and hybrid warfare.
The renewed Nigeria–UK alliance comes at a time of heightened geopolitical instability, particularly tensions involving the United States and Iran, which have raised concerns about global security realignments.
Analysts say Nigeria’s move to deepen ties with Western allies reflects a strategic effort to strengthen its security architecture and international partnerships in an increasingly volatile world.
During the banquet, Tinubu also recalled his personal history with the United Kingdom, noting that he found refuge there during the military regime of Sani Abacha in the 1990s.
He revealed that British authorities, including the Metropolitan Police, provided protection during that period following threats from agents of the military government.
Describing the support as “deeply humbling,” Tinubu said the UK’s solidarity during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle remains a significant part of the country’s democratic journey.
Diplomatic and Strategic Significance
The ongoing state visit underscores a broader push to elevate Nigeria–UK relations beyond traditional diplomacy into a comprehensive strategic partnership spanning:
Security and defence
Trade and investment
Energy cooperation
Regional peacekeeping
The visit is also seen as a signal of Nigeria’s rising diplomatic profile and its intent to play a more assertive role in regional and global security matters.
With formal talks between Tinubu and Starmer expected to conclude with new commitments, observers anticipate concrete outcomes including enhanced military collaboration, intelligence sharing, and possibly new defence agreements.
The evolving partnership positions Nigeria as a central security actor in West Africa while reinforcing the United Kingdom’s strategic engagement in the region.
