Questions have emerged on social media following claims about the monthly earnings of a Lecturer II at Covenant University, the private institution founded by David Oyedepo.
According to the claim circulating online, a Lecturer II—who may likely hold a doctoral degree—earns about ₦133,000 monthly after tax and other deductions as at 2024. Although this is about two years ago, but the low payment has continued to spark online debate.
The figure has triggered discussions about the welfare of academic staff, particularly within private universities where tuition fees are often significantly higher than those charged by many public institutions.
Observers note that lecturers in such institutions are responsible for teaching students from wealthy and influential families who reportedly pay millions of naira in tuition to attend the university.
The development has raised broader questions about remuneration within the academic sector and how compensation structures may affect the morale and professional confidence of university lecturers.
Education stakeholders say the debate underscores the need for greater transparency and improved welfare for academic staff across Nigeria’s higher education system.
