The Body of Benchers on Thursday, March 5, 2026, held its Annual Lecture and the presentation of the report of the Directions of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee at the Body of Benchers Complex.

The lecture, themed “Body of Benchers: Beyond Call to Bar,” brought together distinguished members of the legal profession, jurists, academics and other stakeholders to examine the evolving responsibilities of the Body in maintaining the standards and integrity of the legal profession in Nigeria.

The annual event serves as a platform to highlight the activities of the Body of Benchers and its critical role in promoting discipline, ethics and professional values within the legal community.

Speaking during the lecture, the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Olugbemisola Titilayomi Odusote, said the responsibilities of the Body of Benchers extend far beyond the ceremonial function of calling new wigs to the Bar.

She described the Body as an important mentoring institution that provides ethical guidance and leadership for legal practitioners throughout their professional careers.

Odusote also emphasized that the mentoring role of the Body is particularly significant for students of the Nigerian Law School who aspire to be called to the Bar. According to her, the roles of the Council of Legal Education and the Body of Benchers are complementary in shaping the training, discipline and professional development of members of the legal profession.

She added that the Body could further strengthen its mentoring influence by utilising after-dinner speeches at Law Dinners as platforms for guidance, reflection and the transmission of professional values to younger members of the Bar.
