Viral images and videos circulating online have shown groups of students in parts of northern Nigeria marching in protest while trampling on the flags of Israel and the United States in what observers describe as a demonstration of solidarity with Iran.
The footage, which surfaced on social media this week, shows students gathered in organised processions where large replicas of the Israeli and American flags were laid on the ground and stepped on by participants during the march.
Reports indicate that the demonstrations are linked to rising tensions in the Middle East, with protesters expressing support for Iran amid allegations of attacks involving the United States and Israel. Some of the participants were also seen waving Iranian flags, carrying placards, and chanting slogans critical of the two countries.
Sources suggest that some of the rallies may have been organised by supporters of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), a Shiite group known for staging demonstrations in Nigeria over international political and religious issues.
Similar solidarity marches are said to have taken place in several northern states, including Kano, Gombe and Niger, where protesters reportedly carried portraits of Iranian leaders and voiced condemnation of U.S. and Israeli actions in the Middle East.
The images have generated mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians expressing concern about the involvement of students in demonstrations related to foreign political conflicts, while others defended the protest as a form of solidarity with Iran and criticism of Western policies in the region.
As of the time of filing this report, Nigerian authorities and school administrators in the affected areas had yet to issue an official statement regarding the viral footage or the circumstances surrounding the demonstrations.
