The viral social media controversy involving influencer Michelle Mukoro, popularly known as King Mitchy, and activist VeryDarkMan, has drawn widespread condemnation from entertainers, civil society groups and public health advocates, following videos allegedly showing the consumption of bleach during an online feud.
The backlash intensified after livestream clips circulated across TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, with viewers claiming King Mitchy appeared to drink a substance believed to be bleach amid criticism over her alleged school renovation claims. The situation escalated further with online rumours alleging that VeryDarkMan also consumed a similar substance in response, alongside unverified claims of his death and burial — posts that quickly went viral before authorities cautioned against spreading misinformation.
In response to the disturbing trend, Multipro Enterprise Limited, manufacturers of Hypo Bleach, released a firm public statement reiterating that the product is strictly for household cleaning purposes.
The company emphasised that Hypo is formulated to remove stains, whiten fabrics, eliminate odours and kill 99.9 per cent of germs — and is not safe for human consumption under any circumstances.
Marketing Manager Adebayo Adeyemo described the viral content portraying bleach as drinkable as “dangerous, fabricated and life-threatening,” warning that even staged acts or pranks could encourage imitation and lead to fatal consequences.
Several popular Nigerian entertainers have openly criticised the incident, describing it as reckless and irresponsible.
Comedian Koffi called for accountability, warning that public figures must understand the influence they wield over young audiences. He stated that such acts, whether real or staged, send the wrong message to impressionable followers.
Nollywood actor Ijebu also condemned the trend, urging law enforcement agencies to investigate the circulation of harmful livestreams and cautioning content creators against turning life-threatening acts into online entertainment.
Other musicians and online personalities echoed similar concerns, stressing that clout-chasing culture should never endanger lives.
While conflicting reports and unverified burial photos continued to trend, authorities have urged the public to rely on confirmed information from credible sources. Police sources indicated that viral content involving harmful substance ingestion may be reviewed to determine whether any public safety laws were breached.
Medical experts have reiterated that bleach contains corrosive chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite, which can cause severe internal burns, organ damage, poisoning and death if swallowed.
Public health advocates stressed that no online feud, backlash or social media pressure justifies risking one’s life.
Hypo Bleach is a disinfectant and cleaning agent only. It must never be consumed.
The public is advised to disregard and report dangerous online challenges.
Individuals facing emotional distress are encouraged to seek professional support.
The incident has reignited conversations about digital responsibility, misinformation and the growing dangers of extreme online stunts in Nigeria’s social media space.
