The ongoing Niger Delta Games has been thrown into controversy following the expulsion of five athletes over confirmed violations ranging from falsified state-of-origin claims to age manipulation.

The disciplinary committee’s sweeping action has sent shockwaves across participating states, stripping medals, cancelling results, and igniting debates over screening procedures at the regional sporting fiesta.

In what many describe as the most dramatic fallout yet, swimming sensation Otunla Kolade Israel, who had won five gold medals and one silver for Edo State, was stripped of all titles after his National Identification Number reportedly revealed he is from Ikorodu in Lagos State — not Edo as registered.

The revelation has not only altered the swimming medal table but also raised serious concerns about verification processes prior to competition.

The controversy extended to handball, where Bayelsa’s John Vera and Ayimba Maria were disqualified after investigations confirmed they were overage for their competition category.
Chess was also affected, with competitor Goodness Ekunke removed over inconsistencies found in submitted documentation.

Athletics witnessed its own share of drama as Okafor Adolphus, who competed under Ondo State, was disqualified after findings showed he is from Anambra State and had allegedly misrepresented his age.

While several athletes fell under sanctions, others were cleared following review.
Bright Joel Udoh (Edo, Table Tennis) and Wisdom Chibueze Nweke (Abia, Tennis) were allowed to retain their status after officials ruled there was insufficient evidence to justify disqualification.

Similarly, Delta State’s Ngozi Okereke Treasure was permitted to compete in athletics despite an age discrepancy reportedly flagged by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. Officials stated that no concrete legal proof was presented to substantiate the claim.

The disciplinary measures underscore the Games’ commitment to fairness and credibility, but the unfolding saga has intensified scrutiny on screening protocols and state representation verification.

As the Niger Delta Games continues, questions linger: How many more cases could surface — and could tighter screening have prevented the embarrassment?

For now, the message from organisers is clear — eligibility rules are not negotiable, and violations will carry consequences.
